Any recommended books I could read?

It is a great idea to read a few books about Syria and/or the Middle East before you leave if you feel generally unfamiliar with the region. The Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani is quite famous for his romantic poetry throughout the Arabic-speaking world. A travel guidebook can be very helpful find as well.
